THE LAKE OF OHRID UNDER THREAT OF URBANISATION

author: Goran Lefkov

But this hotel is not the only attempt for urbanization and destruction of the lake.

“The adoption of the Law on Tourism Development Zones in 2012 provides this type of zones to be zones of public interest. Which means procedures and all documents relating to its implementation or enforcement in a faster or shortened procedure. The main condition to be able to create a tourism development zone is the state to be the owner of all this land”, said Aleksandra Bujaroska from NGO Front 21/42.

A place in the tourism development zones was also given to the Indian businessman Subrata Roy and his Sahara Group but he has not built anything yet. He has been arrested in India for financial crime, and there is still an ongoing case against him.

To please the controversial Indian businessman, it was planned Lake Ohrid to be covered with sea sand.
